Itinerary

Algarve CyclingDay 1 – arrive in Faro by train or plane where you will be met and transferred to Vila Real de Santo Antonio on the Spanish border where you will be fitted with your bike. Vila Real is a border town on the Guadiana River and is one of the Algarve's largest fishing ports; you will stay in the heart of the old town close to the waters edge.

Day 2 – today we start to turn the wheels as we have an easy ride along the new cycle path through part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park to Tavira an extremely attractive town with its narrow streets, river banks lined with gardens and covered market. Once again you will stay in the heart of the old town close to the waters edge. (32km)

Day 3 – from Tavira we move inland along quiet roads with magnificent scenery for a lunch stop in the old town of Sao Bras de Alportel before finding our overnight destination a fabulous restored Quinta hidden deep in the countryside. (45km)

Day 4 – a real mixture of tracks and quiet roads today makes for a very interesting ride. We pass by the classified site of Fonte de Benemola and then along the banks of the Algibre river to the old town of Paderne. Once refreshed our route is ever westwards to the town of Silves, the former Moorish capital of the Algarve. (48km)

Day 5 – now we are really in the groove as we cycle along very quiet country roads before making our way to the coast and the Alvor estuary. Here we can see local people collecting clams from the muds at low tide and a wide variety of wading birds enjoying this beautiful spot before we arrive at the town of Lagos, famous for its links with Henry the Navigator and the Voyages of Discovery. (52km)

Day 6 – another great day in saddle as we ride inland though the National Forest on good tracks before heading for the cliff tops and dropping down into the Budens wetlands on our way to the fishing village of Salema with its picturesque cliffs. (40km)

Day 7 – the 'End of the Earth' awaits! We ride again along the new cycle path through the countryside of the Cape St Vincent Natural Park and then we leave it to make our way along a wonderful track on the west coast which takes us to Cape St Vincent and to the town of Sagres – we have made it! (28km)

Day 8 – transfer after breakfast back to Faro.
